We turned the pages to John 10:28 where we have a tendency to scan:
“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”
“That claims the identical factor 3 times,” commented Phil. “God says that He gives unto us eternal life — life that never ends, then He says that we have a tendency to shall never perish, and then He says that nobody can ever be in a position to pluck us out of His hand.”
“That is right,” the boys agreed.
“Well,” said Phil, “since I truly don’t apprehend whether or not I’m saved or not I’d like to create sure right now.”
Then Phil quietly bowed his head and prayed this sim-ple prayer, “Lord, return into my heart and save me. If I’ve got never before given my life to You, I’m doing therefore right now. Please forgive me of my sins — and be my Lord. And thank You for doing it. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”
That was a precious time for all of us.
From that moment on Phil was sure, not as a result of of his feelings, but as a result of God’s eternal Word said so. Interestingly enough that day marked a nice change in his life. Some months later after I was talking with Phil I asked him whether or not he still had his ”apprehend-therefore” salvation.
“After all I do,” he said. “Ever since that day in the park after I settled it all, there is never been a doubt in my mind.”
“However how can you be sure?” I questioned.
“Because God says therefore in His Word.”
Completely! Phil was right. There is nothing more cer-tain than God’s Word — “Heaven and earth shall expire, but my words shall not expire” (Matt. 24:35).
However Phil’s case was not at all unusual. Many people have this problem.
It absolutely was a real problem with Jon. Some years ago I flew up to Iceland on a speaking tour. The primary day I used to be introduced to Jon, a tall, blonde fellow, typically Nordic, chauvinistic, and in each sense an Icelander. Jon was to be my pianist for our two weeks’ stay. That night I brought a message on the assurance of salvation. And at the tip of the service Jon came to me and shook my hand. ”I want to many thanks,” he said, “for coming back to Iceland. This is often only the primary night, but already your trip has been a success!”
“What does one mean, Jon?”
